Monthly Meeting Minutes

President Richard Boland opened the meeting at 9:03. There were 32 members in attendance. Thanks to Ann Duke and Nancy Gooding for refreshments.

The minutes of August 24 General Meeting were read and approved.

Announcements:
Richard O'Dwyer from the MG class of 06 has passed away. The association will send the appropriate remembrance.
The Holiday Party on December 14 will need volunteers.
A spring (07) trip to Philadelphia is being planned with Pender and New Hanover MGs. Stops would be made in Richmond, Norfolk and certain wineries. This trip will be approximately one week in length. See Charlie if interested. Also, let Charlie know of any other trips of interest.
Richard introduced a new MG Barbara Stone who has transferred from Lumberton MGA.
Richard thanked Patty Burns for Life on the Farm curriculum which she wrote.
The 07 budget committee was introduced - Gene Allen, Ann Marie Bellamey, Barbara McCoy and all were thanked for their work.
It was recommended that everyone get a tetanus shot if your last was received over 15 years ago. Anyone working in gardens should make sure you are current with this shot. These shots are available at the Brunswick County Health Center.
Following the meeting there will be an 11/2 plant sale in the greenhouse.

Officer Reports:
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman
: The State MG Conference is now up to 280 people. BCMGVA will have a hospitality room so plan to get there early and enjoy.

Linda Lemieux: Current treasury balance is $18,266.09. The copy of the report attached to this report was given to all present.

Coordinator Report:
Charlie Spencer: Just completed the 7th publishing of Gardening by the Month. Approximately 30-35 books have been sold recently and books will be sold at the State MG Conference.
Seminars: Southport Library today, all day Coastal Gardening Seminar at Extension Center tomorrow, Southport Wal Mart - Saturday, September 30.
Future Events: Plant Sale October 12-14 sign up sheets passed. Clip board will be in hot line office. See Charlie to volunteer for Heritage Day at Indigo farm on October 7. Life on the Farm will be held the end of October. The 4H association needs to make the schedule. Sign up if you want to volunteer for this event. Training will be offered.
Charlie reported that Billy Privette's mother has suffered a heart attach while on a trip.

Horticultural Agent Report:
David Barkley: Progress has been made the Botanical Garden and stated this garden will be used as an educational tool in tomorrow's presentation and future presentations. Night lighting is being installed and a class in November or December may be held to show the effect of these lights in the garden.
David thanked everyone involved with the Rain lily project for their help.
Anyone wishing to enter fruits, vegetables or nuts in the State Fair should see David. David mentioned that April Blazich, horticulture crop display coordinator appreciates the entries we offer. He will take all entries on October 10 so have them to him by October 9.
For the Cape Fear Regional Fair, David suggests an Educational Booth representing our Life on the Farm seminar. David stated that the association receives payment for this booth. This will be held 10/24-11/5 at the Wilmington Airport. Five or six volunteers are needed.
Ron Gooding has set up a plant index in the computer. Everyone was asked to NOT TOUCH this index in the computer. There is a print out of all this information in the hot line office.
David showed a sample of a plant he was asked to identify. After seeing a picture and getting a specimen with a seed pod, he determined it was a Mexican Hydrangea.

Committee Reports:
Ash Tyler: Spoke about Plant Sale October 12, 13 & 14. Ash requested help on 10/2-10/4 to water plants in greenhouse to be sold at the plant sale.

Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman:
The Reunion Social has been moved to Wednesday, November 15. Three hospitality hostesses are needed to man guest book, give out name tags and programs. Other areas needing help are; set up and break down of tents and tables, food and drink - prep work to be done the day before, decorations - prep work to be done the day before and history - set up in large meeting room. Sign up or call the designated subcommittee chair to volunteer. Since many activities will over lap, don't sign up to help in multiple areas.

The meeting was adjourned following the presentation by Rick Morris Regional agronomist with NCDA, Agronomic Division on the topic of Soil Science.
