The meeting was called to order by President Dan Sokoloski at 9:00 A.M. with 25 of 179 members present.

  1. Dr. Wanda Sykes, Director of the Southeast District of Master Gardeners was introduced. Dr. Sykes would present a program at the conclusion of our business meeting.
  2. Treasurer's Report. Linda Lemieux presented the following: End of October balance $12,801.81

    Deposits 1,617.00

    Expenses 543.91

    Balance to date 13,131.00

Plants and "Gardening by the Month" are still being sold. It was noted that the largest part of the current balance has been designated for existing and projected projects, leaving a real balance of about $2000.00.
  3. Elections: On behalf of the Nominating Committee, Peggy Meinzer presented the slate of nominees for officers for the coming year:

    President - Richard Boland

Vice President - Shirley Waggoner Eisenman

    Treasurer - Linda Lemieux

There being no other nominations, Jim Meyer moved that the Secretary cast one vote for the slate as presented by the Nominating Committee. The motion was duly seconded and passed without objection.
  4. State Meeting: Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman and Richard Boland gave brief reports on the state meeting at Goldsboro, encouraging others to plan to attend the 2006 meeting which will be held on the Outer Banks.
  5. Coordinator's Report: Charles Spencer reported that, much to our chagrin, Kathy Walters will be leaving us at the end of November to take another position within the county government. Kathy will be recognized at our holiday party for all she has done for us and meant to us.

Due to proposed changes in the complex, all construction plans are on hold. This will affect the Tree Trail and the construction of our new building.

It appears that inmate labor will once again be available to help with the extension of the electrified fence at the green house campus.

A discussion ensued regarding the cost of fencing the perimeter of the green house area. Charlie suggested that the project can be completed for no more than $2000.00 which would come from "New Project" monies. Arlene Hubner moved that we proceed with the fencing project spending up to $2000.00. The motion was duly seconded and passed without objection.

Charlie extended congratulations to Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman on being chosen Outstanding Volunteer of the Year to the applause of the membership.

Contrary to a previous announcement, Charlie will cook the turkey for the Holiday Party. The association will provide everything this year including hors d'oeuvre. Help in food preparation will be appreciated.

The new Master Gardener class will begin February 3. We were asked to advertise by word of mouth.

School projects are planned for Union Elementary School and potentially Shallotte Middle School.
  6. David Barkley presented a blue ribbon and cash prize to Bill Duke, courtesy of Ann Duke, for his food entry in the State Fair food competition.
  7. Our Master Gardener chapter placed fourth and won a $30.00 cash prize for entry in the Cape Fear Fair. Thanks to the Master Gardeners who were working the Hot Line and were drafted to do this project.

The waterfall leak has been repaired with the help of Hilton Holcomb and his crew. Kudos!

Interactive Plant Clinic Updates are being planned. More on this later.

The Advanced Plant ID Class will begin March 28 and the Advanced Turf Class in April. More on this later.

Hazardous Household Waste Collection Days are scheduled April. More on this later.

In the planning stages are a Pond Management Seminar as well as a class in Successful Landscape Gardening. More on this later.

David alerted the membership to a Soy Bean Rust problem which is of concern mainly to farmers in the area.

The business of the day being concluded, the meeting was adjourned at 10:05 A.M. to be followed by a short refreshment bread and a program by Dr. Wanda Sykes.
