President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. There were 45 in attendance. Dominique Lowenstein and Linda Rudick were thanked for providing the refreshments. The master gardeners from the new class were welcomed.
Secretary, Patty Burns read the minutes of the February 28, 2008 meeting which were accepted and recorded as read.
Treasurer, Allen Smith stated as of 3/26/2008 the balance ending was $5,785.03 with month-to-date deposits of $760.00 and expenses of $2,087.57. An updated budget item of $7,000 was added for the trailer with a $500 deposit expensed. He and Ash Tyler are working on opening up a Lowe's home goods account with an invoice of items purchased sent to BCMGVA on a monthly basis. It was noted that an audit of the 2007 books will be done by the former BCMGVA Treasurer's husband.
Newsletter Editor, Joe Loughlin reminded everyone that the calendar is on the website and if anyone has an interesting event coming up, not necessarily MG event, to let him know and he will put it on the calendar.
Greenhouse/Restitution: Ash Tyler reported that there are more plants for sale this year than we ever had and he expects a good plant sale. Restitution has 20 people and they are working in the greenhouse to help get ready for the plant sale.
Gardens: Jim Blake stated that pruning needs to be done in the gardens now. Fred Mina has temporarily taken over the hardscape projects from Hilton.
President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman stated the reception for the 2008 conference will be at Silver Coast Winery and the Purple Onion will do light hors-d'oeuvres. David indicated the speakers and workshops that are lined up are excellent. It was noted that the facility at Sea Trails is large enough to hold everyone that signs up for each workshop. There will be a meeting of committee chairs after this meeting to discuss more details.
Coordinator, Charlie Spencer handed out plant sale flyers and asked people to post them in their communities, if possible. He stated that there are ten books made up which show information on all the plants that will be for sale. He asked that everyone make sure and fill out their timesheets. Recorded volunteer hours are needed to keep your MG certification, for the spring awards banquet, and also for the annual report. It was suggested that the timesheet book be brought to each general meeting. The Supply Elementary project went very well and he thanked those who helped. He said we have an opportunity to sell rain barrels and asked for a few people to help put them together. They will be sold for $50.00 each. Shortly, he will be putting out the upcoming events for April, May, and June. The waterwise program is at the Extension office on 4/3 from 5-7 p.m.
Horticultural Agent, David Barkley stated the two new classes are going very well. A letter will be sent to the 2007 class on where they stand in volunteer hours. He and Grace Wrigley met about retaining speakers for the upcoming year. The Plant ID class starts today, 3/27, and the Landscape class starts on 4/2. The household hazardous waste disposal day is 4/19 in Shallotte (place yet to be determined). Southport will hold one in September. The JC Raulston program will be on 4/5 and he will send more information on it. He gave a general outline on the topics and speakers for the 2008 conference workshops.
Master Gardener, Carol Wilson reminded everyone to join the State Association. Dues are $10.00 and to see her if you want to join.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m. followed by a presentation from Ken Fager from NCSU on organic vegetable gardening.
The next general meeting will be April 24th. Guest speaker will be Peter Hertyl from NCSU on Ground Pearls. Refreshments will be provided by Gail Earley and Debby Jacoby.
Respectfully submitted,
Patty Burns, Recording Secretary
