Twenty two Newcomer Kits are being sent to the Leland area as a result of the seminar. An all day seminar is to be held on May 13. Help is needed to assist for the Oak Island Beautification Tour to conduct a plant clinic on May 14. Life on the Farm at Indigo Farms is on for May 20, 26 and 27. A major project at Seaside United Methodist Church is under way and they would appreciate our help in moving plants and reconditioning plants. Master Gardener help would be appreciated. Appreciation to those who planted bulbs ( about 4000) and helped repair the liner in the water garden. Summit Meeting: Extension is going through changes. The importance of volunteers was a reoccurring topic.
Arlene Hubner-Eiseman: April 2, all day, Poplar Grove Plantation is having an herb and garden fair. New Hanover Master Gardeners are having their plant sale beginning March 30. Hobby Greenhouse Club in Wilmington is having a plant sale during the second weekend in April.
International Luncheon: Recipes are available for those who wish to help by preparing food for the International Luncheon on April 23. Submit your receipts for reimbursement.
Communications: Brunswick County Extension Secretaries expressed their appreciation for our support in hosting the annual meeting of their state association.
Membership: Charlie is developing a plan to reach out to inactive members.
Initiatives:
Mobile Gardening. Much enthusiasm for the concept. The central thought involves a vehicle which should be owned by the extension service. This is being studied by David, Charlie and Martha. Ownership and management need to be considered.
Junior Master Gardener Program. Shirley Wagoner-Eisenman has had some contact with individuals in other parts of the state. Statewide, this program does not exist. Some locations in NC have something akin to JMG but the cost is a large consideration. Presently, materials come from Texas A&M University and are very expensive. Out best alternative seems to reach out to the schools to determine how we can best promote the idea among their students. This needs to be done slowly and carefully. We might then be in a position to develop a program unique to Brunswick County. It is agreed that we must have a program for the youth of our county.
Special Education Class from Shallotte Middle School. Ash reported that eight students were involved for two hours during which they worked with tomato plants. Plans are to have them come at least twice per month during the school year.
Local Meetings. If any members wishes to have the monthly meeting held in their local, contact Dan or Charlie to work out the details.
The business meeting concluded at 10:25 A.M. Following a break, a colorful program on Camellias was conducted by Mr. Bill Howell.
Respectfully Submitted
Richard Boland, Recording Secretary
