Monthly Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 9:05 by President, Richard Boland.
Attendance sheet was passed while Richard reminded all to pay dues and sign recertification forms found in MG (Master Gardener) office. The minutes from the January General meeting were approved.
Barbara McCoy and Vicki Kay were thanked for providing refreshments. Special thanks should also be noted to Richard and Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman for providing refreshments at the Jan. meeting. The Nov. meeting is still in need of refreshments. Please see Richard or Cathie Rod to sign up. Richard encouraged all members to READ the NEWSLETTER - either on line or request a hard copy.
Richard has appointed Barbara McCoy and Vicki Kay as BCMG Historians to organize all past and current information on the BCMG association. Along with volunteer photographer, John Kellett, he has asked them to create an up to date display depicting the various MG events throughout the year.
In Charlie SpencerÕs absence Richard offered the following information:
- The $500 donation has been sent to LA and MS respectively for the MG programs in their state.
- The Supply School project training will be next Thurs., March 2, 1:00 pm at the Extension Center. All volunteers should attend.
- There is an opportunity to hear Alessandro Tombelli, well known for garden restoration and design, speak at the Coastal Garden Club meeting on Mon., March 20. The meeting is at the Brunswick Electric Building in Supply at 1:00. Only 40 spots are available so call Bette at the Extension Office to sign up and meet here to car pool. Cost is $3.50.
- Sign up sheet was passed for volunteers for Brunswick Home and Garden Show, Sat. & Sun. March 25 & 26. Please call Charlie or Richard if you can volunteer to break down display at the end of the show.
- Ron Gooding mentioned the good attendance of 33 people for CharlieÕs presentation at the Barbie Library on Wed. 2/22.
Ash Tyler, Greenhouse, thanked all volunteers who helped give away tree saplings on Tues. 2/21. Grace Wrigley stated many customers had asked for information sheets on planting saplings and suggested this be done for the next tree give away. Ash responded that in the past these had been received with the trees, but not this year. He also reminded everyone to give time to the Hot Line and volunteer in the greenhouse to prepare for the first plant sale in April. Ash also informed us to keep track of our mileage for the MG programs as 14 cents per mile can be deducted from our taxes.
Hilton Holcomb, Gardens, stated all work is on hold until the weather is nicer. Tulips will be received soon for planting and well as other plants and while others may need transplanting. A list of work duties will be listed in the Newsletter. The drainage problem at the greenhouse will be resolved when appropriate workers are available.
Maggie Hoon asked all members to check the Newsletter for dates and work duties in the Botanical Garden. Volunteers work 3 different days during each month so choose the time which is best for you.
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, Vice President Ð profit from Jan. meeting was $328.88 which is going into speakers' fund. Shirley spoke about the State MG conference Oct. 1-3 at Kill Devil Hills and gave the web site of www.NCMASTERGARDENERS.org for more information. Registration forms should be received in May or June. A pictorial display of each county MG association has been requested.
Shirley also discussed the Southern Regional MG meeting June 8-12 in Chattanooga, TN. Members can go to HTTP://SRMGC.TENNESSEE.EDU/. Peggy Meinzer is taking a digital photo class and suggested the instructor as a guest speaker at an MG meeting.
David Barkley, Extension Agent: upcoming events. Fri. 3/31 Costal Gardening Seminar "What Your Plant Needs" at Extension Center from 9-3, lunch provided, fee to be announced Ð guest speakers are David Hardy, NC AG. Dept. talking on soil testing and Bill Fonteno, NC State professor speaking on building urban soils. This meeting is limited to approximately 100 people. Thurs. 5/4 seminar on Pond Management. Fri. 3/3 David will give a presentation at the Garden Living Show in Charlotte. Tues. 3/28 new Plant ID class begins and on Tues. 4/4 new Turf Grass class begins.
DOT has requested BCMG help in saving rain lilies on the endangered species list which are located in the path of the new Sunset Beach Bridge. Seeds must be collected and planted quickly in beds to insure new plants. David asked MG members in this area to monitor this issue and be ready to take action before construction begins.
Johnson's Nursery will be donating some plant material to the Botanical Garden. David asked all Hot Line volunteers to get phone #s so he can respond to calls. He thanked Fred Mina for conducting the MG class on 2/15 and stated Dan Sokoloski would be teaching class on 3/15. He also encouraged practicing MG members to attend the current classes as they wish.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:06 am followed by a presentation by Phyllis Meiole on "Ability Gardening".
