The meeting was brought to order at 9:05 by President Richard Boland. There were 43 in attendance. Thanks to Anita Waite and Charlie Spencer for refreshments.
The minutes of July 27 General Meeting were read and approved.
Richard Boland made these announcements:
A new Newsletter editor is needed. It requires 10-12 hours per month. Becky Dus will serve in a consulting role.
Newly appointed budget committee as well as nominating committee will be meeting with Richard. Discussion on composition of nominating committee will be addressed. There should be two elected members and Lynn Schwartzkopf is the appointed member.
All chair persons are to forward budget requests to Richard or Ann Marie Bellamy.
Reminder was made to pick up certificates and name badges.
MG roster was passed to members to add names of spouses or significant others.
Reports:
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman - Passed out fliers on Big Sweep of Brunswick County. Volunteers are needed to help beautify your county and post fliers about event.
The State Conference is filled to capacity with 250 signed up to attend.
September guest speaker will be Rick Morros on soils.
Reunion Social on November 10 needs funds. Shirley made a Motion to transfer from the Contingency fund to line item Reunion Social the sum of $950. These added funds will enable the committee to complete their work for the MG Reunion. Motion was seconded by Ash Tyler and the motion carried.
Barbara McCoy: Volunteers are needed for the Historical Committee. Pictures have been found at the extension office from years 93-06 and some have been put in date order. Any pictures or other type of information you may have of MG volunteers at work or play from 1993 to 2006 would be appreciated by the committee for use at the State Conference and the Reunion Social. A committee meeting will be held at the Extension Center 9/18 from 10:00am to 1:00pm
Linda Lemieux: Copies of the treasurer's report was submitted to all in attendance and was received as information.
Charlie Spencer: Seminars are being scheduled for county libraries in September. Coastal Garden Seminar on 9/29 is from 9-3 at the extension office. Presentations will be given at the Coastal Garden Club and Wal Mart in September. Information will be in the Newsletter
Association roster update is complete and copied for all members. All members should be able to receive e mail.
Charlie has decided to stay on in his role as MG Program Coordinator. With the help and guidance of Al Hight as acting Extension Director a list of projects has been made: lights and every variety of crape myrtle to be added along the walk in the Botanical Garden; circle will be planted - have walking path and possible a fountain; alcove to the left of the front entrance will be planted with semi-tropical palms; and an open house may be held when the crape myrtles are in bloom next year. This may allow the Botanical Garden to have the designation as the only garden in the US with all varieties of crape myrtles that are grown
The Extension Center needs volunteers to act as receptionist on Friday, Aug. 25.
Life on the Farm will be restarting the last two weeks of Oct. Watch the Newsletter and emails for more information and volunteer for this project. Jim Myer made a Motion to transfer $900 from the New Project fund to this line item. Becky Dus seconded the motion and the motion carried. The 07 budget will contain a line item for Life on the Farm. Training manuals are already available from previous presentations and meetings to prepare volunteers will occur shortly.
David Barkley: Rain lily project at the new Sunset Beach location is ready to go with preliminary dates of September 6, 7, 8, 11 and 19. David will decide on final plans and approach for gathering seeds/plants with volunteers. There are approximately 590 plants that are marked.
David asked for volunteers to help groom the Botanical Garden for a tour Tuesday, August 29 of the BC Government Wellness Program members.
Hilton Holcomb: New beds have been planted in the Botanical Garden with the appreciated help of Jim Blake the MG summer intern. There is ongoing work to improve the appearance at the entrance to the Botanical Garden and the greenhouse with more drainage issues being addressed.
When using MG tools in any of the gardens please clean and put back appropriately.
The purchase of a power point for all presentations was discussed. Items needing purchase are: lap top computer, programs, projector, screen and pointer. Overhead slides, slides for carousel and posters can be made using these items. Barbara McCoy and Linda Rudick will help with this project and training of other MG volunteers in its use.
Maggie Hoon: September work days for the Botanical Garden will be Monday and Tuesday - back to back - because of the holiday. E mails will be sent to all volunteers.
Ash Tyler: Asked all to check with the lost and found for items left at the greenhouse.
With the help of Al Hight, the holding beds in the front of the greenhouse will be expanded with added irrigation.
Southport Wal Mart has donated 5 loads of plants (many perennials) that will be groomed for the plant sale in October. Volunteers are needed to ready these plants and other purchased plants plus those grown in the greenhouse area for the plant sale.
Ash feels the restitution program has had a good success rate and accomplished many needed improvements.
Pat Hagerty: Pat has ordered the plaque to be placed in the Botanical Garden in recognition to all the past BCMGVA members. This plaque will be placed in the arbor opposite the existing plaque to Dave Denny.
David introduced Dr. Kenneth Sorensen the guest speaker.
The meeting was adjourned following the program by Dr. Sorensen on management of vegetable and fruit pests.
