The meeting was called to order by President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, at 9:00 a.m. In attendance were: David Barkley, Patty Burns, Becky Dus, Joe Loughlin, Fred Mina, Charlie Spencer, Ash Tyler, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, and Grace Wrigley.

Minutes of the February 21, 2008 board meeting were accepted as information.

Treasurer, Al Smith:

As of 3/19/2008, the budget balance is $8,246.80. The only change from last month was the addition of $7,000 for the "Trailer" (New Project 1) expense account. A $500.00 deposit is also shown under "Trailer" expenses. Al stated the books are now ready for the 2007 audit and Shirley asked him to contact Linda Lemieux to see if she will do the audit. Ash and Al will work together on opening up a BCMGVA account at Lowe's home goods store. It was also noted that historical financial records will be stored in Charlie's office. An updated list of those who have paid their dues will be put in the timesheet book and a copy given to Charlie.

Greenhouse/Restitution, Ash Tyler:

A lot of work is needed now in the greenhouse with the plant sale coming up in April. Recently 700 beef steak tomato seeds were planted with 660 of them needed for the school. Small pepper plants were also planted. Restitution now has twenty members but only about six are working here at a time since they can choose between four different places to do community service. They are currently making rain barrels.

Secretary, Patty Burns:

Hard copies of the board and general meeting minutes, as well as the general meeting attendance rosters, will be put in the MG office.

Vice President, Grace Wrigley:

A list of topics for the 2009 general meetings was compiled and will be discussed with David.

Newsletter Editor, Joe Loughlin:

Everyone got their information to him promptly for the newsletter. He will verify the times of the board and general meetings posted on the website calendar and correct, if needed.

Hardscape, Fred Mina:

Some of the major hardscape projects that he will be working on this year include two ramps, decking replacement, the bridge over the dry creek area, and the storage sheds. Charlie indicated that there is lumber, stone, and brick available to use.

Banquets/Parties, Becky Dus:

It was noted that the only parties this year will be the recognition banquet in June and the holiday luncheon in December.

Coordinator, Charlie Spencer:

The list of paid members is one of the three lists he needs in order to provide Membership with the MG Certification list. The other two lists are the hours of the class of 2007 and the hours of those prior to 2007. He proposed that the 2008 class, as well as future classes, be told that they need to do 20 hours of hot line time before the end of the year then start with their 40 hours in January so everyone is on the same annual schedule. David okayed this proposal and it will be announced in the new classes.
The garden show is 3/29 and 3/30 and has enough volunteers. He will send out an email shortly for volunteers to help with the plant sale on 4/10, 11, 12th. A waterwise seminar will be held April 3rd from 5-7 p.m. He will get with Peggy Meinzer to reorder more Gardening by the Month books. He stated he and Ash will be busy the next couple of weeks picking up plants for the plant sale.

Consumer Horticultural Agent, David Barkley:

There was a good response to the advanced landscape class. The plant ID class still needs more people and he has invited the commercial people that studied for their Certified Professional exam. Ken Fager will speak on organic vegetable gardening at the March general meeting and Pender county MG's have been invited to attend. David will get more information on Earth Day at Southport Community Center. NC Cooperate Extension has now adopted a new logo. David will provide more information on a new state plan which will include a change in the MG program.

President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman:

An update meeting for state MG conference chairs will be held after next Thursday's general meeting. A set of labels from each county with the names of all North Carolina MG's is being requested in order to mail out the conference invitations. The MG's from the northeastern area of SC will also be invited. Invitations will be sent out on 6/27.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:05 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Patty Burns, Recording Secretary
