Executive Board Meeting Minutes

Present: Richard Boland, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, Ash Tyler, Becky Dus, Maggie Hoon, Charlie Spencer, David Barkley and James Blake (summer intern)
Reports from the following chairs:
Ash Tyler: New tents have been purchased and are stored in the shed. Guidelines for their use will be available at the next board meeting, but specific for MG use only. Tents have been reserved for Reunion Social.
Plants, from individuals/ greenhouse and retail outlets, to be given away, will be available at the next meeting. There will also be annuals available from Wal Mart.
Future plant sales will NOT have pre-sales and guidelines will be drawn up for volunteer start times and purchases.
Becky Dus: The email notification to members that the newsletter was availability was not sent. Becky will check with Lisa and make sure the MG office knows to send this notice to all members.
Charlie Spencer: The updated list of active MGA members has been completed.
MG members who DO NOT have 40 volunteer hours, paid dues, dues paid-but no volunteer hours are being eliminated from the Association list. Letters will be sent to members not in compliance. There will be a few honorary members. David Barkley will be given THREE MG lists of members; those in the association, active/not in the association and inactive. The board is concerned with the 1st group only. There will be a fact sheet prepared for the next board meeting explaining the role of an MGA member, how to remain a member, what the membership does, etc.
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman made a motion seconded by Maggie Hoon to purchase a $50 gift card from Belk for Gina in appreciation for all her help and work on behalf of the MGA. The motion was passed and Gina will be invited to the General meeting on July 27.
An additional 4H session will be offered on July 31 from 1-3pm possible (similar to Life on Farm) for a Hispanic group.
Southport Wat Mart presentation Sept. 30 from 10am -1pm/ planting of trees and large patch treatments. Large patch treatment with Bayleton, Banner MAXX, Heritage, etc. in early Sept. with 4-5week follow-up. Bayleton very effective@2oz rate, not @1oz rate. Heritage less expensive. Wal Mart may stock less expensive sizes good for residential use. A written article on Large patch will be available for next meeting.
Up coming events: Coastal Gardening seminar on Sept. 21, next plant sale is October 12, 13 and 14. State Fair, October 20-29
David Barkley: Area of rain lily project at Sunset Beach has been mowed with markers missing. If markers can be found, plants will be dug for potting.
The junior Horticultural judging team won the state contest and the senior team came in second.
David has just returned from attending the State Ag Agents meeting. He has thank you notes from the youth who participated in fun activities using funds contributed by BCMGA.
Ideas for the Botanical have been listed with the help of Jim Blake.
David needs to find new air blast sprayer for spraying trees with Japanese beetles.
Up coming events David will be attending: Plant clinic on August 8 at Leland facility - confirmation will be sent to members. Agent training on August 17 and an Aquatic Plant Management meeting in SC the 17and 18 in SC. New Hanover honoring MG program's achievements on September 18.
James Blake: Has dug up trees in his neighborhood which will be sold at future plant sales. Ash will arrange to have trees transported to the greenhouse area.
Maggie Hoon: Lots of work done in gardens on Monday, July 16. Feels another plaque should be made and placed in the arbor explaining purpose and stating memorial to past MGA members. A book should also be created listing those who have financially contributed to the Botanical Garden.
Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman: Reunion update- committees created, class lists reviewed and has July 25 meeting with Gina, approximately 300 will be invited. Activities will include, a program, greenhouse/ hoop house tours, historical pictorial display in meeting room (created by Barbara McCoy ,Vicki Kay and John Kellett), plus donated plants as prizes/remembrances.
For State Conference, Shirley will be working in the Hospitality Room and needs a volunteer to take on all the responsibilities of organizing the sale of Gardening by the Month books.
Future guest speakers are being contacted by mail after problems with email to some.
