The meeting was called to order by President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, at 9:00 a.m. In attendance were: David Barkley, Patty Burns, Dominique Loewenstein, Joe Loughlin, Charlie Spencer, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman, and Grace Wrigley.
General Information and Discussion:
- Shirley asked Patty Burns to send a notice of the board meetings to officers and committee chairs one week in advance of the meetings.
- It was noted that board meeting and general meeting minutes, as well as the monthly newsletters, are posted on the BCMGVA website and if board members are not receiving notices, etc. to verify their email address with the office.
- A contract has been signed with Lisa Miner as webmaster for 2008.
- Joe will check the accuracy of the dates and times on website calendar.
Newsletter Editor, Joe Loughlin:
- Joe stated that everyone got their information to him by the February 5th due date.
- Shirley asked that a note be put in the next newsletter about the workdays stating that Jim Blake is available to tell volunteers what needs to be done in the gardens. Charlie indicated he will send out an email two or three days before the workdays to those volunteers who have signed up to help.
- More Master Gardener information is needed for the newsletter. Charlie will give Joe a list of upcoming activities to be included each month.
- David Barkley stated that our new District Director, Danny Shaw, is asking that success stories be written on our activities showing impacts on the community. Shirley asked that these stories also be put in the newsletter.
Membership, Dominique Loewenstein:
- Al Smith just provided Dominique with a list of paid members. Charlie will provide her with an updated list of certified Master Gardeners within the next few weeks. The two lists will be combined and discussed with Charlie before notifying members that they havenÕt paid their dues. He will also be meeting with John Baronowski to figure out a system to computerize the lists in the future.
- Shirley indicated that a person can be a Master Gardener and not belong to the North Carolina Master Gardener Volunteer Association (NCMGVA) as long as they are certified by the county where they are a Master Gardener. David will have the Recertification form for the next meeting.
Coordinator, Charlie Spencer:
Charlie indicated that he has enough volunteers for most of the seminars. The sign-up sheet for the April plant sale will be passed around at the next meeting. It will also be announced in the new classes as well as in the newsletter.
Consumer Horticultural Agent, David Barkley:
The two new Master Gardener classes are coming along well. David stated he will not be doing the Turf class this year but will still do the Plant ID class. He is also thinking about doing a new hands-on advanced Master Gardener/Landscape class which will be conducted in anticipation of preparing the gardens for the 2008 conference.
President, Shirley Waggoner-Eisenman:
- Grace Wrigley volunteered to work with David on getting speakers for 2009. She will send a paper around at the next meeting asking the members what programs they would like for the next year.
- The Silver Coast Winery will likely be the reception place for the 2008 Conference. The conference will only have three speakers. Robert Lyons from the University of Delaware will open up the conference and do two talks. Bryce Lane has agreed to close the conference. Cecilia Rivenbark from the Star News will be the banquet speaker. The rest of the conference will be one hour workshops on various topics such as waterwise landscaping, propagation, etc. There will also be three district workshops Ð mountain area, piedmont area, and coastal area which will provide an exchange of information so that all will know what is going on across the state. Clarification was given about the $10.00 difference in registration fees when a person doesnÕt belong to the NCMGVA. The benefits of joining the NCMGVA include a newsletter, website, landscape competition, and a volunteer award. In 2009, there will be option on our dues form to join the NCMGVA and pay the $10.00 extra. A conference update meeting for all chairs will be held after next ThursdayÕs general meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:20.
Respectfully submitted,
Patty Burns, Recording Secretary
